Almarai, a Saudi joint stock company operating in the fields of agriculture, dairy products, and food distribution, includes Saudi Arabia and the Arab Gulf states. Almarai Company was established in 1977 by the pioneers of Irish agriculture, Aleister McGuckian and Paddy McGuckian with Prince Sultan bin Muhammad bin Saud Al-Kabeer, and it is one of the Saudi joint stock companies operating in the production and distribution of agricultural, animal and food products in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Gulf countries. Almarai has an extended partnership with PepsiCo since 2009, through which it acquires a number of the company’s projects in food production in the region. Almarai began its production operations in 1977 under the leadership of His Highness Prince Sultan bin Mohammed Al Kabeer, who has been the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the company since its inception until now. The company’s main building is located in Riyadh. The company started its production with 350 cows. The operating intensity has increased during the past three decades, bringing the pasture herd of cows to 170,000 cows, making it the largest company in the world in the production of milk and dairy products. Savola owns the highest share of the company’s shares, equivalent to a quarter, and the remainder of it has been on the stock market since 2006. In 2005, Almarai entered a new era as it transformed from a privately-owned company to a public offering company, where more than 125,000 people own Almarai’s shares. And at the beginning of 2007, a memorandum of understanding with the owners of Western Bakery Companies Ltd. and the International Services Company for Bakery, owning all the companies, and then increasing the capital (1.090) million riyals. At the present time, the company's capital is 8 billion Saudi riyals. In 2009, Almarai and PepsiCo announced a partnership in the International Dairy and Juices Limited project called (IDG), after which it was announced the purchase of the project (Beyti), the global company for agricultural projects in Egypt specialized in manufacturing dairy products, juices, evaporated milk, flavoring and flavored yogurt. This brand is in Egypt and continues to produce under its brand name as one of the subsidiaries of ADG. During the same year, Almarai entered the poultry sector by acquiring the Hail Agricultural Development Company, which was purchased with $ 253 million in cash and by acquiring the market share. In 2011, Almarai announced its intention to invest in the dairy sector by increasing production volumes in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Arab News also announced the creation of 12,000 additional job opportunities locally over a period of 5 years. The partnership with PepsiCo continued to grow as Reuters announced that the two companies would invest 345 million in Egypt's agricultural projects. This move positively contributed after many of the difficulties the Egyptian economy faced in the past. The revolution that occurred in 2011 and during the same year, Almarai announced the acquisition of a huge agricultural company based in Argentina, and in 2014, Almarai announced that its market share for the dairy sector in the Arab Gulf region is 44%. In September 2015, Almarai raised the prices of some products and reduced some packaging sizes for products while preserving their previous price, which angered many citizens and set up a collective boycott campaign until it ended with returning the packages and prices to what they were. The effect was the boycott. Between the years 2015 and 2016, the company expanded expansively, as it declared that the number of its employees reached 38,000 jobs, meaning that Almarai created more than 30,000 jobs during the past decade. In 2016, Almarai announced its desire to own agricultural land in the United States of America in the California region for the purpose of expanding its agricultural sector, where 14,000 acres were owned. In 2017, Savola announced that it would reduce its stake in the company by 2%.
