★ ★ ★ ★ ★ This is where the air base moved to after the Khobar tower boming. Did two tours here in 1997 and 1998 when I was in the USAF. First time here was still the "tent city". The second time, we were housed in real concrete buildings to the west. This was the largest air base in the AOR (area of responsibility) for the Sothern No Fly zone during that time. We flew F16s, F15s, U2 spy planes, C-130s, Reaper UAVs and the British flew their GR1 Tornados. The 101st Airborne and some Marine units were also with us. The Army protected the base with their Patriot missles against Scuds. Got to fly over the blown up Iraqi tanks from the "Highway of death". Got to visit downtown Rhiyad, the ancient sand castle, the gold market, Rhiyad mall and the "chop-chop square" where they would behead criminals. We had Burger King, Baskin Robins and Pizza Hut. Awesome memories!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Was stationed there while deployed in 2003 during Iraqi Freedom with 363 SFS/ 363 CES....was a great assignment and an interesting location both the Coalition Compound and the main Airbase.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Was assigned to the Security Forces at the 4404th Expeditionary Wing (Provisional) from Dec. 97 to Apr. 98. Incredible sunrises and sunsets, worked with a lot of good people...the place looked like the surface of Mars ?

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ All of my photos are a mix of Talley's and others. Our deployment was great with many twists and turns. The neer beer, chow hall, USO, TDY's, swimming pool, showers, tent city, MRE's, dust storms and all the people deployed with us made it one of my favorite deployments. My time was cut short but I will never forget it. We spent a lot of time entertaining ourselves and harassing each other to no end. A lot of good memories here.
