رأى قيس بن الملوح كلب ليلى فأسرع خلفه حتى يدله على مكان محبوبته ، فمر في طريقه بقوم يصلون ولما رجع مر بهم فسألوه : " قد مررت بنا ونحن نصلي فلم لم تصل معنا ؟ "
قال : والله مارأيتكم ، ووالله لو كنتم تحبون الله كما أحب ليلى لما رأيتموني ، كنتم بين يدي الله ورأيتموني ، وأنا بين يدي كلبها ولم أراكم .
