أجمع أئمة المذاهب (الإمام أبي حنيفة، الإمام مالك، الإمام الشافعي، الإمام أحمد) أنه لا يحوز حلق اللحية، بل يجب إعفاؤها.
واستدلوا على الوجوب بالأحاديث الصحيحة، وفيها قرابة عشرين حديثاً من الأحاديث الصحاح، ومن ذلك قول النبي عليه الصلاة والسلام: "جزوا الشوارب وأرخوا اللحى خالفوا المجوس"، وفي بعض الروايات" اعفوا" حيث أمر النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم بالإعفاء
