The name Abu Jifan refers to the wadi and the nearby wells but is famous for the stop over that King Abdulaziz made here while en route to reclaim Riyadh in 1902. The fort is under renovation today and one can see the wells; some of which with stone lining and still have water.
While the Saudi government listed it as an archeological site in 1395 Hijrah (1975 gregorian) it was rebuilt around 2007 and has been abandoned since. The gates are open and you are able to go in and walk around. We did not see another soul the whole trip!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Great place to visit. Best time on winter and spring. That's when the temperature is a little cool. They say this place used to be a resting place for those traveling to perform hajj pilgrimage.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ It is great experience of going off the road, if you love adventure and got a bit of a adrenaline rush.
The way needs a professional driver with a higher ground clearance car or an excellent skilled driver with a 4x4.
I drove on this terrain first time but I consider myself a very good skilled driver. It was my first time operating a Land Cruiser LC200 on a terrain like this.
The Fort itself is somehow well maintained and preserved by the Government. Hopefully soon it would be recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
